Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians Timeline: The GT versus MI rivalry has become one of the most exciting rivalries in the IPL. With five IPL titles and a legacy of developing world-class talent, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have arguably established themselves as the standard for success year after year in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Gujarat Titans made a strong start, winning the championship in 2022 and finishing as runners-up again in 2023.

GT vs MI matches are typically intense battles where you typically see the winners of games decided in the last over. The teams first met in 2022, and since then, GT has been able to score 7 wins, and MI has 2 head-to-head wins over GT. Both MI wins were at Wankhede Stadium, but both were decided in close matches. Conversely, GT has easily surpassed MI at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Let’s have an all-inclusive Gujarat Titans vs. Mumbai Indians Timeline. Scroll down for more.

Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians Timeline: 2022 to 2025

From 2022 to 2025, the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans met eight times. In this short but competitive time span, the rivalry is dominated by GT (5) ahead of MI (3). There was a fascinating period in 2025, when GT beat MI in a rain-shortened thriller, and MI beat GT in the playoffs. Every time these two franchises meet, both come out at their best. It is a huge achievement for GT to have some head-to-head battles against the enormous 5 times champion MI.

2022: The Initial Gathering

Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have met only once in their inaugural 2022 season. In this encounter, the Mumbai Indians managed a nail-biting close win by 5 runs. After this loss, the Gujarat Titans had a great first season and went on to win their IPL final against the Rajasthan Royals. As a result of this incredible feat, even if they have the same number of wins as MI in head-to-head matches, they are one of the IPL’s best-class sides of all time.

2023: The Year of Skill and Retribution

During the 2023 season, the rivalry between the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Titans continued, with them meeting three times this season. The Mumbai Indians won only once. Out of the three contests, Gujarat won twice, knocking Mumbai out of the contest, and headed to the final. However, a trophy was not in their future as they lost to the CSK, but this was a great season, showing the power of the Titans and their resilience.

2024: Closest Finish has the advantage for Gujarat

The two teams played each other just once in 2024. The first one was just as intense as the last one from 2022. After a delayed final for the IPL season, on March 24, both teams met. Gujarat Titans promise to start turning the Narendra Modi stadium into a stronghold, which continued from their first match as a team, with it still being a complete finish. The match ended with Gujarat just about protecting their score, with the match ending 6 runs ahead of them. Just another IPL thrill-ride, which had plenty of tech drama for their match, with the Gujarat bowlers being made of steel.

Meanwhile, for Mumbai, it was another reminder of the hard-fought loss away from Mumbai, and a reminder of the company they are situated in with this new cavalry of the IPL.

2025: Titans Show their Strength but Mumbai get the other win when it mattered

The Titans had privileged their head-to-head record against the Mumbai Indians until 2025, and set up three more opportunities for both teams to play each other. The first of them was on March 29, in the early part of the season, again at Ahmedabad — and yet again, Gujarat maintained their home dominance with a fairly straightforward 36-run victory. Gujarat’s performance was that of a well-oiled machine: clinical batting, pinpoint bowling, and responsible fielding.

The two teams faced each other for the second time on May 6 to play at the Wankhede Stadium, this time under overcast skies. Because of some rain interruptions, the match was tried to be concluded using the Duckworth–Lewis method. Gujarat chased a reconstituted target and left victorious by 3 wickets. It was an unbalanced and ragtag effort, but an indication of Gujarat’s ability to succeed in uncertain, high-pressure circumstances.

However, it was the Mumbai Indians that took center stage during the final act of the 2025 season. On May 30, in the first Eliminator Final, the two sides were set to clash for a tenth time in a rivalry short, but now firmly embedded in recollection. In this match, played at a neutral venue at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Gujarat lost for the first time.

The Mumbai Indians will be using all of the mental gymnastics and playoff experience to eliminate Gujarat by the score of 20 runs. It was a disappointing elimination for Gujarat, but a superior playoff victory for Mumbai over a team that beat them repeatedly the last couple of seasons.

A Rivalry of Progression and Flame

With eight meetings between 2022 and 2025, Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians has created a riveting IPL rivalry for the modern age. Gujarat Titans hold the advantage of the head-to-head record of 5 to 3 against Mumbai, but statistics do not capture the essence of the drama. The games had high-scoring shootouts, low-scoring thrillers, coconut water-impacted games,  and playoff eliminators.

It’s especially interesting to consider this encounter not just on the day of the result, but to consider differences in legacy and styles of play. The Mumbai Indians were the old school — five-time winners with years of IPL under their belts. The Gujarat Titans are representative of the new breed of IPL cricket — bold, analytics-driven, and stock-heavy with young, new talent. For them to play these games is so much about this big story within the IPL and the challenges of the old by the new, and how cricketing history is being rewritten using innovation.

After a series of results in favor of Gujarat – and recent seasons where they were consistently stronger – it was Mumbai’s success in the 2025 Eliminator that again showed Gujarat that class and experience count when the pressure is at its highest. The Titans have developed a fortress in Ahmedabad, but Mumbai is a team that will always respond, especially when its status is at stake.

Forward Thinking

The IPL will keep evolving, and so will the contest between the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians. Gujarat Titans have proven they can consistently beat one of the more successful teams in the tournament, while the Mumbai Indians have a growing reminder to the rest of us – there is never a guarantee, given that form is temporary, but class is permanent, especially in the knockout stage of a match.

Recent record aside, if the last four seasons are anything to go by, the Mumbai Indians-Gujarat Titans rivalry has only just begun. With young giants rising through the ranks, veterans picking up the mantle, and strategies continually evolving, future versions of the rivalry will contain more action, more suspense, and better production quality that introduced thousands of cricket fans to the sport.
