South Africa National Cricket Team vs India National Cricket Team Timeline: Cricket has produced a number of famous rivalries in its journey, but the India-South Africa rivalry has a symmetry, unpredictability and freshness like few others. Until a little over thirty years ago, India and South Africa were a rivalry that never was. The first South African team to tour India did so in 1991, when South African cricket resumed under the banner of international cricket after decades of exile-like isolation. Quite a first assignment, as South Africa was blooded against India; thereby, the two countries were forever connected.

What makes this rivalry so intriguing and unpredictable is the shifting balance of power. In the 1990s, South Africa’s fabled fast bowlers could regularly put India to the sword, particularly when playing outside the sub-continent. In the 2000s, India fought back strongly, producing memorable wins overseas, especially in England and West Indies, before entering the golden period, at least in ODI cricket, of the last decade. India became competitive nearly everywhere during the 2010s and even produced ODI series wins in South Africa, where the Proteas have managed to continually defend their home fortress.

The contests have brought some electrifying ,tantalising moments; Tendulkar vs Donald; Kohli vs Rabada; thrilling World Cup encounters; and series that could have gone either way. Again, this is not solely about stats, but rather two cricketing cultures aiding and abetting one another to higher levels of performance and persistence.

1991–1992: South Africa’s Re-Entry

The re-introduction of South Africa to competitive international cricket came in India as early as 1991. In terms of mere games, the ODI series was a defining moment – with India winning the first two games and South Africa winning its first international game in Delhi. The victory in itself meant little as the match reached more significance than just a result; in many ways, it meant the formal rebirth of South African cricket.

The two sides met again in a World Cup group game in Adelaide in 1992, with South Africa winning again in a polished run chase. Later that season, India toured South Africa for its first-ever Test series. The four Tests were light/dark versions of each other – India was tested on their batsman prowess, and South Africa used its conditions properly with the final result being a 1–0 South African series victory.

1996–1999: South Africa’s Early Rise to Dominance

By the mid-1990s, South Africa had established themselves as a formidable side. In 1996, they toured India for a three-Test series. India first struck in Ahmedabad, but following on from their opening innings, Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock turned the momentum in Kolkata. India eventually came away with a win from the deciding third Test in Kanpur, but when India visited South Africa the following season, they came up short in Durban and Cape Town.

ODIs during this era heavily favored South Africa. In 1997, the Proteas were victorious in three out of four matches in India. At the 1999 World Cup in Hove, Herschelle Gibbs’ fluent 101 propelled South Africa to a win over India again. The writing was on the wall in the text of the decade: India were strong at home, while South Africa held all the aces away.

2000–2006: India’s Breakthroughs

Things turned around in the 2000s. In the 2000 ICC KnockOut in Nairobi, Sourav Ganguly’s India shocked South Africa in the semi-final, stopping their momentum in a major ICC event. South Africa would follow that up with Test series victories in Mumbai and Bangalore.

India’s growth came in patches. In 2001–2004, they were able to pick up important wins at home, most significant at Eden Gardens in 2004, however they were unable to breakthrough overseas. That changed in 2006, when India made history at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. South Africa was India’ first Test win in South Africa, by virtue of Sreesanth’s superb bowling and Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. Although South Africa took the series 2–1, they did break a mental state.

2007-2010: The Rivalry Goes to Even

The 2007-08 series in India epitomised equality. After a resounding innings win for South Africa at Ahmedabad, with inspiration given by Dale Steyn, India fought back to win at Kanpur bringing the series to a level 1-1.

The 2010 series in South Africa will be remembered forever. South Africa had shaken India at Centurion, yet the marvellous spectacle featuring VVS Laxman in the Test in Durban provided India with good victory against South Africa. The series decider at Newlands ended as a draw after the two teams seemed well-matched.

2011-2015 – World Cups and ODI carnage

The World Cup match at Nagpur in 2011 was one of the more exciting matches of the tournament which saw India set a competitive total of 297 with helps from a century to Tendulkar with the score of 111. As South Africa in chase of the target was led amaze by AB de Villiers and JP Duminy, who guided South Africa to hand India their only loss of the tournament.

Two years later, in 2013, South Africa hosted India in a series of Tests, with South Africa demolishing India 2-0 in which Jacques Kallis played his final Test scoring a century in his final Test. In ODIs, the introduction of Quinton de Kock scoring successive hundreds made an entrance.

In the 2015 World Cup in Melbourne, India wrote a different narrative. Thanks to a blistering century from Shikhar Dhawan, India beat South Africa convincingly by more than 130 runs in the group stage, winning their first ICC event against South Africa in the process. At that point in time, it was a beautiful day in India as things changed it 2015, when South Africa hosted India and secured a 3-2 win in the ODI series, while breaking India’s record for the highest score against in an ODI match of 438/4 in Mumbai.

India’s Overseas Resurgence 2017-19

The tour of South Africa in 2017-18 changed everything. Kohli’s India lost the first Test match versus South Africa in Cape Town and the second Test match in Centurion, before finding a level of form to come out with a comeback victory in the third and final Test in Johannesburg. The Johannesburg pitch was uneven and regeneratively bouncy, so when Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah turned it around for India, it was hard fought.

As we know, India after the Test matches launched into a pro-series. Kohli exploded to 558 runs in tandem with two young spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. India has record wins against South Africa, as well as series wins. India won the ODI series 5-1, India’s first ever in South Africa.

In 2019, India did well in their home series against South Africa, winning 3-0, with two innings wins coming in Pune and Ranchi, and when it came to the World Cup, India showed they could handle themselves in neutral conditions as they made easy work of South Africa in Southampton on their way to the title.

2021-2022: South Africa Fighting Back

But when it came to the 2021-22 series, it was clear it was South Africa’s fortress and India were well and truly beaten. While India made history at Centurion with a win, with a century from KL Rahul that helped India secure a rare victory in South Africa, South Africa fought back with Dean Elgar’s grit and determination, coupled with Keegan Petersen’s brilliance helped South Africa rebound in Johannesburg and Cape Town to win the series 2-1 and deny India a rare Test series win in South Africa.

When it came to the ODIs, South Africa whitewashed India 3-0, and exposed India’s transitional issues after Kohli’s time as captain, but it wasn’t until the latter half of 2022 when they met again in T20Is, where both teams had one win each; India’s dominant win in Rajkot however was balanced by South Africa’s upset at Perth during the T20 World Cup with another epic bowling performance led by Lungi Ngidi, who handed India’s top-order difficulties once again.

2023-2024: A Rivalry Of Equals

During the 2023 ODI World Cup in Kolkata, India displayed one of their best performances against South Africa. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made runs and a brilliant 5/33 from Ravindra Jadeja decimated the Proteas batting line-up, leading to a 243-run win for India.

In the follow up series later in 2023, the bilateral started in South Africa ended as a tie. Aiden Markram was the player of the match in Gqeberha but Shreyas Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad lead India to victory in Johannesburg.

The Test series that followed had the same symmetry: South Africa hammered India in Centurion but India bounced back with a determined win in Cape Town, resulting in a tie series at 1-1.

In 2024 India closed out their T20 dominance with a massive 135-run win in Johannesburg, but the rivalry overall continued to toss up uncertainty – and that is precisely what makes it enduring and unpredictable rivalry!

South Africa vs India Head-to-Head (up to 2024)

Tests: SA 18, India 16, Draws 10

ODI: SA 51, India 40, NR 3

T20Is: India 18, SA 12, NR 1

Conclusion: A Rivalry Of Changing Fortunes

Over three decades the India-South Africa rivalry has ebbed and flowed more than a pendulum.

The 1990s were dominated by South Africa’s fast bowling and disciplined approach. The 2000s established India’s resilience culminating in their first wins abroad. The final decade of the 2010s found true balance with India braving new territories while South Africa held onto their fortress.

It might be easy to say South Africa leads Tests and ODIs while India leads T20Is in pure numbers; but, if you look beyond numbers, the rivalry has been defined by moments that are hard to replicate—Tendulkar vs Donald, Dravid vs Kallis, Kohli vs Rabada, Bumrah vs de Kock.

It is a rivalry in which we can never script an outcome, and that is why every new series between India and South Africa feels like the continuation of an incomplete story.
